Reign: 268-270 A.D. Original Name: Marcus Aurelius Valerius Claudius Previous Emperor: Gallienus (253-268 A.D.) Next Emperor: Quintillus (270 A.D.) Died: died of the plague Notable Facts: * Claudius was an officer in the army of Gallienus before becoming emperor when Gallienus was murdered in 268 A.D. * Many sources claim that Claudius was one of the officers that planned Gallienus' murder, as was another future emperor, Aurelian (270-275 A.D.). * When Claudius became emperor he was known as Claudius II. * Claudius I ruled the Roman Empire from 41-54 A.D. and is not related to Claudius II * Received the title Gothicus after winning a massive victory over the Goths, who had invaded the Balkans in 269 A.D., and was often referred to by this title after this point. * Minted a wide variety of reverse coin types, including a few that are quite unique. _____
