Meshorer 1a King of Nabataea Petra mint 110-96 B.C. 16mm 3.1g
Nabataea was a kingdom occupied by Arabic people starting way back in the 7th century B.C. This Kingdom stayed in existence until, roughly, the 1st century A.D. Located in the southeastern area of Syria, Nabataea was noted especially for the city of Petra, also known as the City of Stone. This city was erected in a strategically sound location, surrounded by mountains, easily defended from enemies and with plentiful water. Making use of Petra were the many caravans using the area as a trade route, and the taxes collected off those merchants by the Nabataeans ensured the wealth and survival of those citizens for many centuries. This is a coin of Aretas II. Aretas ruled over the Nabataeans in the second Century B.C. That is the Greek Goddess Nike on the reverse of this coin. She is depicted here with her wings open, and though dark, the image is present and fairly clear. The bust is also an interesting sight on the obverse side, with the long-braided hair depicted here as a line of dots. Good view of the face as well.
