Item Description

Lord Baltimore Shilling 1658 Historic Colonial Replica

Description

Interesting, Beautiful, Historical

To my knowledge, the best representation of authentic historical colonial coins out there.

Excellent item & low price = Value to you

Your satisfaction guaranteed

What you are bidding on is a replica of an original coin. These replicas were made by taking an impression from original coins in private collections or from various museums and historical sites. These reproductions are cast in pewter alloy, which resemble the weight and feel of the originals. They are electroplated in copper, nickel (silver) or real gold. Then they are antiqued and hand-burnished to faithfully duplicate the rich appearance of the old coins. These replicas look old and the unique way they are created means that no two replicas look exactly alike, just like you would expect from the real coins.

An authentic colonial coin could sell for hundreds or thousands of dollars. In the case of the Lord Baltimore Shilling, the value for an original coin would be around $10,000 in Fine to Very Fine condition.  Here is your opportunity to have a replica of an actual colonial coin at a significant fraction of the cost.

These handsome replicas make distinctive gifts and memorabilia for historic occasions. They will also serve as valuable teaching aids and provide interesting exhibits.

Lord Baltimore Shilling - 1658

Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, inherited from his father nearly absolute control over Maryland. Cecil believed he had the right to coin money for the colony, and in 1659 he ordered shillings, sixpences, and groats (four-penny pieces) from the Royal Mint in London. Cecil’s right to strike coins was challenged but upheld by Cromwell’s government. The whole issue was small and while his coins did circulate in Maryland at first, by 1700 they had largely disappeared.

Calvert’s coins bear his portrait on the obverse with a Latin legend calling him “Lord of Mary’s Land.” The reverse bears his family coat of arms and the denomination in Roman numerals.

Hobby Protection Act

The replicas in this auction are marked with the word copy on one side. (see pictures) It is usually obvious but sometimes it is weak. The The Hobby Protection Act, 15 U.S.C. § 2101, et. seq., requires manufacturers of imitation numismatic items to mark plainly and permanently such items with the word "copy."  Failure to do so may constitute an unfair or deceptive act or practice pursuant to the Federal Trade Commission Act.
